Portraitor charges $10, holds no account, removes names and numbers on your own device before anything is sent, and keeps the conversation nowhere. Which is right depends on whether you want a relationship read or a record that does not persist.

Both of these read an exported chat and hand back something about the people in it. They answer different questions, and they make opposite choices about what happens to the file afterwards. Every claim below about Mosaic was read on Mosaic’s own live pages on 8 October 2026 and re-checked there on 23 October 2026, and every claim about Portraitor comes from its home page and privacy policy, read the same day. Mosaic changed what its free plan returns between those two dates, and the figures below are the current ones.

What each one gives you back

Mosaic is built around two people. Its WhatsApp page describes a week by week sentiment timeline, each person’s share of messages and busiest hours, a compatibility score from 0 to 100 split into phases of the relationship with example messages behind each one, MBTI style personality reads, and a word cloud of what each person says that the other does not. A guide called Myrah then answers questions about the report.

Portraitor is built around one person. Its privacy policy describes the output as inferences about a single participant in the conversation you choose, covering personality traits, attachment and conflict style, emotional regulation, motivations, communication style and darker personality tendencies, each carrying an estimate of confidence. There is no compatibility score, because there is no second subject.

That is the first real fork. If the question is how the two of you are doing, Mosaic answers it directly and Portraitor does not answer it at all. If the question is how one person comes across, Portraitor is pointed at it and Mosaic reaches it sideways.

What each one keeps

Mosaic’s privacy policy lists what it collects: personal information such as your name and email address, conversation data meaning the content of the conversations analysed including text and other media, usage data, and derived data, which it defines as assessments generated from your conversations including personality type, attachment style, communication patterns and behavioural traits. It says it retains your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, and that you can delete any conversation from your dashboard and delete your account from within the app.

The policy also lists, among the uses of that information, generating psychological and behavioural profiles from conversation content, sharing derived trait profiles with matched users through a matching feature, and training and improving models using anonymised, aggregated data.

Three further clauses are worth reading in full, because they qualify the word anonymised. The policy says anonymisation is applied when using data beyond direct service provision, which places it after your conversation has been processed rather than before. It says certain derived analyses may contain verbatim quotes from conversations. And under business intelligence and commercial products it says anonymised, aggregated data may be used to create insights, research, tools, products and services that may be shared with or provided to third parties, with a separate clause for collaboration with research institutions. The policy also states that it does not sell your personal information, which is a different undertaking from not reusing it.

It records that data is transferred to and processed in the United States, and it was last updated on 1 July 2026.

Portraitor’s policy describes a different shape. Names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials are removed on your own device before anything is transmitted, and the list matching each placeholder back to a real detail never leaves your device. Photographs, videos and voice recordings are never opened and never transmitted; only the written messages are read, on the device, and only their masked text is sent. The conversation content is not stored, is held only for as long as generation requires, and is never written to a database, to backups or to logs. There are no user accounts, so there is no account for anything to be retained against.

The policy adds that if the masking does not complete successfully, nothing is transmitted and the payment is refunded automatically, because the masking runs on your own device and a failure stops the upload rather than sending unmasked text.

The limit worth stating in the same breath is the policy’s own: masking removes who is speaking, not what was discussed. If a conversation covered health, beliefs, relationships or sexuality, those passages still reach the analysis provider with the names taken out.

One honest caveat, because this is a page about privacy. The Portraitor website and this blog run Google Analytics, which sets cookies, and the privacy policy says so and offers an opt out. A tool that processes nothing in a browser can make a cleaner claim about analytics than Portraitor can. What Portraitor can say is narrower and about the conversation itself: it is masked before it leaves, and it is not kept.

What happens to the other people in the chat

This is the part most comparisons skip, and both companies address it in writing.

Mosaic’s policy has a section headed Non User Data. It says uploaded conversations contain messages from participants who have not agreed to the policy, and that by uploading you represent you have a reasonable basis to share the content. It separately lists third party data, defined as information about other participants in conversations you upload, among the categories it collects.

Portraitor’s policy says the other participants’ names, email addresses and telephone numbers are removed on your device by the same process, before anything is transmitted, so neither Portraitor nor its analysis provider learns who they are, and that it holds no record of them. It still asks you to confirm you have permission before you pay. The practical difference is that under one approach the other person’s identity is a category of collected data, and under the other it is replaced before transmission.

What they cost

Mosaic’s pricing page says uploading a chat is free, with no signup and no card, and that the free plan gives you a word cloud and relationship strengths. The full report, which it lists as a sentiment timeline, a compatibility score, personality and patterns, comes with Pro, at $1 for the first month and then $9.99 USD a month. Pro also lets Myrah read your actual messages rather than only the report and gives forty times as many Myrah messages. It says Pro can be cancelled at any time and runs to the end of the month paid for, and that payments are handled by Stripe.

Its plan table puts numbers on that. Free allows 50 chat uploads a week and 5 Myrah messages a week; Pro allows 100 uploads and 200 messages, and saves 5 Myrah conversations per chat rather than 1.

Portraitor’s home page lists $10 for a single portrait with no account and no renewal, and $19 a month for ten portraits that refill automatically and can be shared from one pool. There is no free tier. The fuller breakdown is in how much a chat analysis costs.

On price Mosaic is still the cheaper way to start, because uploading costs nothing and Portraitor has no free tier at all. What the free plan returns is a word cloud and relationship strengths rather than the full report, so the comparison on a first purchase is $1 for a month of Mosaic Pro against $10 for one Portraitor portrait.

Where Mosaic is the better choice

Starting costs almost nothing. Uploading is free without an account, and a first month of the full report is $1, so finding out whether this kind of thing is useful to you is cheap in a way Portraitor cannot match.

It covers more places a conversation might live. Its site lists analysers for WhatsApp, Instagram, iMessage, text messages, Telegram, Messenger and Snapchat. Portraitor’s home page lists four: WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram. If your conversation is in iMessage or Snapchat, Portraitor cannot read it and Mosaic says it can.

It answers the relationship question directly, with a compatibility score and a sentiment timeline, and it lets you keep asking questions afterwards and share the report by private link. Portraitor produces one portrait of one person and nothing conversational follows it.

It is also candid in public about what it cannot do. Its WhatsApp page carries a section headed honest limits, which states that WhatsApp caps exports at about 40,000 messages without media, that photos, voice notes and stickers are not analysed, that the report is designed for one to one chats, and that it shows patterns in messages rather than what is in anyone’s head. That is more than most tools in this category will say on a sales page.

Whether Portraitor is worth it for you

Buy it if the thing you want is a reading of one person that does not leave a copy behind. The specific, checkable version of that is the one worth deciding on: identifiers stripped on your device, the placeholder list never leaving it, media never opened, no account, and the conversation not written to a database, backups or logs.

Do not buy it if you want a compatibility score, if your conversation is on a platform it does not accept, if you want to try something free first, or if you want a tool that will keep answering questions about the report. Those are all reasonable things to want and Portraitor does none of them.

If the sticking point is what leaves your device at all, whether it is safe to upload your chat history sets out the full data path, and how the Pass works without an account covers the checkout. For what no tool of this kind can tell you, including this one, see what a chat analysis cannot tell you about someone. For the opposite end of the range, a tool that transmits nothing at all and gives up the model reading in exchange, see Portraitor against WhatsAnalyze, and for one that takes the export as WhatsApp wrote it and keeps the finished report for ninety days, Portraitor against LoveGraft. You can see the flow itself at Portraitor.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Is Mosaic free?

Partly. Its pricing page says uploading is free with no signup and no card, and that the free plan gives a word cloud and relationship strengths. The full report comes with Pro, which the same page gives as $1 for the first month and then $9.99 USD a month.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does Mosaic keep my conversation?

Its privacy policy says it retains your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, and that you can delete any conversation from your dashboard and delete your account from within the app.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does either one use my chat to train an AI model?

Mosaic’s policy lists training and improving models using anonymised, aggregated data among the uses of the information it collects. Portraitor’s policy states three limits on what its analysis provider may do with the text it receives, and states them expressly rather than leaving the matter to inference.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which one works with iMessage?

Mosaic’s site lists an iMessage analyser. Portraitor’s home page lists WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram, so an iMessage conversation is outside what it accepts.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do I need an account for either?

Mosaic has sign in and sign up, and its policy collects your name and email address. Portraitor operates no user accounts; a Pass is an anonymous code rather than a login.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which is more private?

They are private in different places. Portraitor removes identifiers on your device before anything is sent and keeps no conversation and no account. Portraitor’s website and blog do run Google Analytics, which sets cookies, so it cannot claim to run no tracking of any kind.

</details>

One of these keeps a relationship and gives you a score for it. The other keeps nothing and gives you one person.
