That rules out a great deal, and the privacy policy is specific enough to say exactly what.

Most pages about a tool like this describe what it produces. This one describes the edges, because the edges are what decide whether it is worth $10 to you. Everything below is what the policy and the home page state, not what the output feels like.

It cannot read anything that is not written down

The policy says chat exports often contain photographs, videos and voice recordings, that the service never opens them and never transmits them, and that only the written messages are read. A conversation carried mostly in voice notes or images is, as far as the analysis is concerned, a mostly empty conversation.

The same applies to everything that never reached the chat at all: the phone calls, the time spent together, the tone of voice, the message someone drafted and deleted. A chat export is a record of typing, and a portrait cannot exceed its source.

It does not know who anyone is

Before anything is transmitted, your browser replaces names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials with anonymous placeholders, and the policy says the list matching each placeholder to a real detail never leaves your device. The analysis therefore never learns who the people are.

The policy is equally clear about what masking does not do. It removes who is speaking. It does not remove what was discussed: if the people in the conversation talked about their health, beliefs, relationships or sexuality, those passages travel inside the anonymised text, without any name attached. Both halves of that sentence matter, and the second half is the one most services leave out.

It covers one person, not a relationship

The home page flow asks which person in the conversation you want a portrait of. One person is one portrait. That is a real limit rather than a packaging decision: a reading of how one participant comes across is not the same object as a verdict on how two people are doing, and the page on group chat analysis sets out how that works when more than two people are in the thread.

It is an inference, and it says so

The policy describes the output as inferences about a participant in the conversation, and says each one carries a confidence estimate. An inference with a stated confidence is a different kind of claim from a measurement, and reading it as a measurement is the commonest way to be misled by a page like this.

A confidence estimate also needs reading against a second effect: a general description can feel exact without being about anyone in particular. That effect has a name and a 1949 origin, and it is the subject of why personality descriptions feel accurate.

No part of the output is a finding about anyone’s wellbeing, and nothing on this blog should be read as a reason to act on one. If a conversation worries you, a page of text generated from an export is not the thing to rely on.

It remembers nothing afterwards

This cuts both ways. The policy says conversation content is not stored, is held only for as long as generation requires, is discarded once the portrait has been produced, and is never written to the database, the backups or the logs. There are no user accounts, and your portrait history sits in your own browser, which the page on buying without an account goes through.

So there is nothing to compare against. A portrait is a reading of one export at one moment, not a tracker, and asking it to show change over time is asking it for something it is not built to hold.

Whether it is worth it for you

It is worth it if you want a careful outside reading of how one person’s written messages come across, and you can accept that it is an inference drawn from text alone. Portraitor sets out the four step flow and the price, and the pages on what comes back from a chat and on which export files work cover the practical side.

It is not worth it if you were hoping for certainty, for a verdict on another person, or for a reading of a conversation that mostly happened out loud. The comparison of free and paid analysers is the better page if the question is really about price.

Every limit above is published, which is the point of listing them here rather than waiting for you to find them after paying.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can a chat analysis tell me what someone is really thinking?

No. The policy describes the output as inferences carrying a confidence estimate, drawn from written messages alone. It is a reading of text, not access to a person.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does it analyse voice notes, photos or videos?

No. The privacy policy says those are never opened and never transmitted, and that only the written messages are read, on your device.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does it know the names of the people in my chat?

No. Names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials are replaced with placeholders in your browser before anything is sent, and the list matching them back never leaves your device.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can it analyse two people at once?

One person is one portrait.
