Chat analyser for iMessage: what each one takes
Portraitor takes an export file from four apps and iMessage is not one of them. Lucen asks for screenshots of the thread instead. What each will accept.
Portraitor will not take an iMessage conversation. Its uploader accepts a .txt, .html, .json or .zip export, and the four apps it guides you through are WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram. If your conversation lives in Messages, the tool to look at is Lucen, whose own iMessage page asks for screenshots or a screen recording of the thread instead of an exported file.
Comparisons of this kind usually open on what the reports look like. This one opens earlier, on the question that can stop you before you start: what will each service actually accept as input. That single question settles the iMessage case, and it settles it against us.
Portraitor gives you four apps to choose from, and Messages is not one
The Portraitor home page opens its uploader with a step headed Choose your platform, under the line we will guide you through exporting your chat. Four apps are listed there: WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram. A second line offers the alternative, drop your file here if you already have it, above the note Accepts .txt, .html, .json or .zip. Further down the page the same four names appear again under the heading Works with.
The page also says which file each route produces. WhatsApp, from the phone or the desktop app, gives a .txt or a .zip. Telegram, from the desktop app, gives a .json. Messenger and Instagram each give a .zip through Export your info. The word iMessage appears nowhere in the uploader or the product copy on that page, and neither does the word screenshot. The one place iMessage does appear on the home page today is its feed of links to this blog, which carries the title of this article.
So the answer to the search that brought you here is short. There is no iMessage route, there is no screenshot route, and the format list is the whole specification. The page on which chat export files can be analysed goes through that list app by app, including the paste text instead option the home page offers for a conversation you cannot export, and what a pasted selection does not promise.
Lucen asks for pictures of the thread, not a file out of Messages
Lucen’s pages carry the copyright line of Hot Ice Studio LLC, and its pricing page says it works across Web, iOS and Android. Its iMessage text analysis page states its input route in the first line of its instructions: to begin your iMessage text analysis with Lucen, simply capture your iMessage conversation using screenshots or a screen recording, then upload it to our AI chat analyzer.
The seven numbered steps on that page keep to the same route. Step two asks you to take screenshots of the full thread from top to bottom, which the page says lets Lucen extract text messages, read receipts, Tapback reactions and response time patterns. Step three offers a screen recording as the alternative for a long history, and says the AI will automatically extract the text and timestamps from the video. Step six asks you to select iMessage or SMS as the platform. Step seven asks you to upload your captured media from your photo library, and adds that your files are processed in a private sandbox and are automatically purged the moment your analysis is complete.
Lucen’s home page suggests a minimum: for best results, we recommend uploading at least 3 screenshots so the AI chat analyzer has enough context to analyze effectively. The iMessage page lists the features Lucen says that analysis produces, among them Red Flag Detection, Hot and Cold Tracking, a Crush Score, a Compatibility Score, an Activity Heatmap, Reciprocity Analysis, Response Time Analytics and Tone Analysis. Those are the names Lucen gives its own outputs on that page, and reading them there is the way to judge whether they are what you want.
The same company wants a file for WhatsApp and pictures for iMessage
Reading four of Lucen’s platform pages in one sitting shows something more useful than a list of supported apps. The input route changes depending on which app the conversation is in, and it changes in a pattern.
Its WhatsApp page asks for a file: simply export your WhatsApp conversation as a text file, save it to your device, and upload it to our secure platform. It walks through Export Chat, recommends the Without Media option, notes that WhatsApp will generate a .txt file or a .zip file, and carries a section headed Works Directly with WhatsApp Export Files. That is the same class of input Portraitor takes.
Its Snapchat page and its Discord page ask for the other thing. Each opens by asking for screenshots or a screen recording, and each carries a section headed No Export Needed, Screenshots Work Instantly. The iMessage page sits with those two, not with WhatsApp.
The pricing page puts a number on how central that route is. Its table of what each plan includes has nine rows. Screenshot Uploads and Screen Recording Analysis are marked as included on the free tier as well as the paid one. Interest and Compatibility Score, Red Flag Detection, Green Flag Detection, Ghost Risk Meter and Data Export Support are all marked as not included on free and included on paid. The image route is the one input method you reach without paying, and the file route is the one you pay for.
A picture of a chat has nothing for the masking step to replace
There is a reason the two designs part at exactly this point, and it is published rather than inferred. The Portraitor privacy policy, version 1.3, last updated 30 September 2026, says that before any part of your conversation is transmitted, your browser removes names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials and replaces them with anonymous placeholders, that this process takes place entirely on your own device, and that if it does not complete successfully then no data is transmitted and your payment is refunded automatically.
The same policy says what happens to everything in an export that is not written text. Chat exports often contain photographs, videos and voice recordings. The Service never opens them and never transmits them. Only the written messages are read, on your device, and only their masked text is sent.
Put those two sentences next to each other and the format list stops looking like a product decision. The step that earns the privacy claim is a find and replace over written words, performed in the browser before anything leaves the device. A screenshot is a photograph of a conversation, and the policy describes photographs as the category that is never opened and never sent. There is no reading of the words to mask, and nothing of that kind is transmitted in the first place. Accepting a picture of a thread would mean sending an unmasked conversation to a server, which is the one thing the design is built not to do.
That is a narrow claim and it is worth keeping narrow. It says what Portraitor’s published pages describe today, and nothing about what any version might do later. The page on what happens to the photos in a chat export follows the attachments that travel beside a transcript, and the page on whether a chat analysis removes names sets out the five kinds of identifier the masking step replaces and the one thing it does not remove.
What Lucen says happens to the pictures once they reach it
If you take the image route, the thing to read is what the service says it does with the images, and Lucen describes it on two pages. The iMessage page carries the badge No data stored after analysis, and says your files are processed in a private sandbox and are automatically purged the moment your analysis is complete.
Its privacy policy describes the same material with different durations. It lists conversation transcripts, extracted from uploaded screenshots or videos, among the information it collects. It says Lucen does not permanently store your conversation data, that your chats are processed temporarily to generate insights, that you can delete them anytime, and that it automatically removes inactive conversations after 3 months. A later section repeats that all user conversation data, meaning transcripts, uploaded conversations and related analysis, is automatically deleted after 3 months of inactivity. The same policy says Lucen does not use your personal conversations to train AI models, names OpenAI as the provider that performs the analysis and says it is contractually prohibited from using your data for training, and says Lucen processes and stores data in the United States.
Both pages are Lucen’s own, and the gap between purged the moment your analysis is complete and deleted after 3 months of inactivity is worth resolving for yourself before you upload anything. The structural point underneath it is simply arithmetic about order of operations: a picture has to arrive before anything can be read out of it, so on the image route the conversation reaches a server in the form you captured it. The page on the most private chat analyser compares who can reach a conversation across several services, and is the better place to take that question further.
Use Lucen for a Messages thread, and read its pricing page twice
If your conversation is in Messages and you want it analysed, Lucen is the choice here and Portraitor is not a candidate. The same holds for Snapchat and Discord, which Lucen covers by the same image route and Portraitor does not cover at all. Its own pages say it works with WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and Discord, and summarise the rule as: if you can export it or screenshot it, we can analyze it. There is no arrangement of Portraitor’s four platforms and four file formats that answers that.
Price is the part to check at the till rather than on the page, because Lucen says so itself. Its pricing page lists weekly access at $12.99 on iOS and $9.99 on Android and quarterly access at $40.00 on iOS and $30.00 on Android, and in the same place states that pricing may vary, that it regularly tests pricing, and that the prices shown may differ from what you see in the App Store, Google Play, or on the web at checkout, with prices listed in USD and varying by region. Read that as a figure that may have moved by the time you reach the payment sheet. The page also offers a free start with no credit card, and the free tier is the one that includes screenshot uploads.
The reports Lucen describes on its iMessage page are organised around interest and intent in someone else’s messages, by that page’s own description, which is a different purpose from understanding a conversation you were part of. Check its sample report against what you actually want. The image route also depends on how completely you captured the thread, which is why its home page asks for at least three screenshots.
What Portraitor will take off an iPhone instead
None of this means an iPhone is the obstacle. Portraitor’s four platforms all run on one, and the home page says WhatsApp can be exported from the phone itself as well as from the desktop app. What it needs is the app’s own export rather than a picture of the screen.
So if the conversation you care about happens to be in WhatsApp rather than Messages, the guide to exporting WhatsApp chat history covers the three routes and which file each produces. Messenger and Instagram both go through Export your info and arrive as a .zip. Telegram needs the desktop app and arrives as a .json.
What comes back from a file that qualifies is set out on the page about analysing a WhatsApp chat with AI, and the visible prices today are $10 for a single portrait with no account and no renewal, or $19 a month for ten portraits that refill, with the arithmetic of what those buy covered on the page about how much a chat analysis costs. If the conversation is only in Messages, none of that applies, and saying so now is cheaper for both of us than a refund later.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can Portraitor analyse an iMessage conversation?
No. The uploader accepts .txt, .html, .json or .zip files, and the four apps the home page guides you through are WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram. iMessage is not among them and the home page does not mention it.
Is there a chat analyser for iMessage that takes screenshots?
Lucen’s iMessage page says it is one. Its instructions ask you to capture the conversation using screenshots or a screen recording and upload that, and its pricing page marks Screenshot Uploads and Screen Recording Analysis as included on both its free and paid tiers.
Check the live page yourself before you rely on any of it, at lucen.app/imessage-text-analysis.
Why does Portraitor not accept a screenshot of a chat?
Because of what the privacy policy says happens before anything is transmitted. Your browser replaces names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials in the written text, on your own device, and the policy says photographs, videos and voice recordings are never opened and never transmitted, with only the written messages read and only their masked text sent. A picture of a conversation gives that step nothing to read or replace.
What does Lucen cost?
Its pricing page lists $12.99 a week or $40.00 a quarter on iOS and $9.99 a week or $30.00 a quarter on Android, and on the same page says pricing may vary, that it regularly tests pricing, and that the prices shown may differ from what you see in the App Store, Google Play or at checkout on the web, in USD and varying by region. It also offers a free start with no credit card.
Can I paste my iMessage text into Portraitor instead?
The home page offers a paste text instead option for a conversation you have no file for, and the masking step runs in the browser whether the words arrived by file or by paste. What a pasted selection can and cannot give you is covered on the page about which chat export files can be analysed.
Which apps can Portraitor take from an iPhone?
WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram, the same four as anywhere else. The home page says WhatsApp can be exported from the phone or the desktop app, Messenger and Instagram arrive as a .zip through Export your info, and Telegram needs the desktop app for its .json.
Input format is the first filter on this choice, and for a Messages thread it is the only one that gets a vote.
Four apps, four file formats
Portraitor reads an exported conversation from WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger or Instagram. $10 for one portrait, or $19 a month for ten. If your conversation is only in Messages, this is not the tool for it.
