Free chat analysers vs paid: what you trade away

Free chat analysers vs paid, compared by price from zero to ten dollars: what each free tier holds back, what it keeps, and where a free tool beats Portraitor.

An illustrated card on a dark purple background: a dotted line runs from a document icon down to two chat bubbles, one sitting inside an archive box labelled kept and one breaking apart into scattered dots labelled discarded, beside the headline Free chat analysers vs paid.

The free chat analysers compared here charge in something other than money: a report held back for subscribers, a monthly cap, or results kept on a server. Of the four, only the free mode of WhatsAnalyze sends nothing anywhere. Portraitor has no free tier, charges $10 for one portrait, and masks names in your browser before the text is sent for analysis.

Every tool on this page will read an exported chat. What changes as the price climbs from nothing to ten dollars is what you hand over instead of money, and how long the service keeps it. The sections below go up that price ladder one rung at a time, using only what each company publishes about itself on its own pages.

Free, because the chat never leaves your browser

WhatsAnalyze sits on the bottom rung and asks for the least. Its home page says everything is read in your browser and nothing is uploaded, and its FAQ says all chat processing happens locally and no data is ever sent to a server. It describes itself as an independent open source project with its code public on GitHub, so the claim can be checked rather than taken on trust.

The free version reads WhatsApp exports and produces statistics: messages per hour, share of speech, word clouds and what the site calls fun facts, with a PDF export of the whole conversation. Its AI chat analyser adds a free on device mode, in which a small open model downloads once into your browser and reads the chat locally. The page says that mode needs WebGPU and roughly 1 GB of free memory, so older phones cannot run it.

The trade only appears when you subscribe. The cloud mode, with a stronger model, is part of the WhatsAnalyze subscription, and in that mode anonymised excerpts are sent: the browser replaces names with placeholders and removes phone numbers, emails and links first, and the page says WhatsAnalyze does not store them and its AI provider does not use them for training. The same page warns that passwords, PINs and other secrets typed into a chat cannot be recognised reliably. On this rung the free option is the one that sends nothing, and the paid one is the one that transmits.

Free to upload, with the full report kept for subscribers

MosaicChats draws its line inside the report. Its pricing page says uploading a chat is free, with no signup or credit card, and that the word cloud and relationship strengths are yours to keep. The full report, which it lists as the sentiment timeline, compatibility score, personality and patterns, comes with Pro, at $1 for the first month and then $9.99 a month, renewing monthly.

The plan table sets the rest of the limits. Free allows 50 chat uploads a week, 5 messages a week to Myrah, its AI guide, and 1 saved Myrah conversation per chat, and on Free Myrah answers from the report only. Pro raises those to 100 uploads, 200 messages and 5 saved conversations, and lets Myrah read the messages themselves; for long chats, the page says, she reads the most recent part and relies on the report for earlier history.

What the upload gives MosaicChats is set out in its privacy policy, last updated 1 July 2026. It lists training and improving models using anonymised, aggregated data among the uses of what it collects, says anonymised data may be used for any business purpose, and says anonymised aggregated data may become insights, research, tools and products provided to third parties. It says anonymisation is applied when data is used beyond direct service provision, that certain derived analyses may contain verbatim quotes from conversations, and that data is retained for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. The data is transferred to the United States and processed there, and the policy says Mosaic does not sell personal information.

On storage, the WhatsApp analyser page says the report is kept under an anonymous hash and stays private unless you share it, and the home page says chat data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The policy says you can delete any conversation you uploaded from your dashboard at any time.

The policy also has a section headed Non-User Data. It says uploaded conversations contain messages from participants who have not agreed to the policy, and that by uploading you represent you have a reasonable basis to share the content. Portraitor’s policy handles the same people at the masking step: their names, email addresses and telephone numbers are removed on your device before anything is transmitted.

One free analysis a month, capped at 5,000 messages

ChatAnalyzer rations by count. Its pricing table gives the free plan 1 analysis a month, 2 reports stored, files up to 2MB, basic engagement metrics and 7 day data retention, and its export guide says the free plan analyses up to 5,000 messages per chat. Pro costs $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year and removes the message limit, with unlimited analyses, 100 reports stored, files up to 50MB and 1 year data retention.

The raw file is the part ChatAnalyzer says it does not keep. Its privacy policy, last updated 24 March 2026, says the upload is held in memory only, processed there and discarded afterwards, and that only the computed metrics are stored, encrypted with AES-256-GCM and keyed per user. The same policy says analysis results are retained until you delete your account or request deletion, and that account data means your name, email address and a hashed password when you register. The pricing table’s 7 day retention on the free plan and the policy’s wording are both on the site, and neither page explains how the two fit together.

On cookies it is ahead of Portraitor. The policy says ChatAnalyzer uses only essential session cookies for authentication and no tracking or advertising cookies. The cookies Portraitor sets, and why, are set out in what cookies a chat analyser sets on your browser.

Free statistics first, then a single payment for the reading

LoveGraft gives the numbers away and charges for the interpretation. Its how it works page says your chat’s statistics are free, in seconds, as a short summary it calls Chat Wrapped: who texts more, peak hours, late night messages and top emojis. The full report is a one time payment of €4.99, or a lower local price in many countries, shown before you pay, with no subscription.

LoveGraft publishes its retention as a table, item by item. In its privacy policy, effective 23 August 2026, the uploaded chat file is kept up to 2 days, or 7 days for uploads through its WhatsApp bot; the finished report is kept 90 days; and the key moments the report was built from, short paraphrases and quotes from your chat, are kept 90 days alongside it.

The same policy names the AI providers. Google’s Gemini models read the chat and write the report, xAI’s Grok models take over the affected part of the chat if Google’s service fails, and Anthropic’s Claude models check what the analysis finds against the messages it came from, with Anthropic retaining data for up to 30 days for trust and safety purposes. The policy says every provider is configured not to use your data for model training. A paid report here costs less than a Portraitor portrait, and the price comes with a fixed, published schedule for how long each copy lasts.

No free tier, and what ten dollars pays for instead

The Portraitor home page lists two prices and no free option: $10 for a single portrait with no account and no renewal, or $19 a month for ten portraits that refill automatically and can be shared from one pool. There is no way to try it on a chat before paying. The arithmetic of those two prices is set out in how much a chat analysis costs and what each price buys.

What the money pays for is described in the privacy policy, version 1.3, last updated 30 September 2026. Before any part of the conversation is transmitted, your browser removes names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and credentials and replaces them with anonymous placeholders, entirely on your own device; if that does not complete, no data is transmitted and the payment is refunded automatically. The list matching each placeholder to a real detail never leaves your device. Photographs, videos and voice recordings in an export are never opened and never transmitted.

The policy says the conversation is held only for as long as generation requires and is discarded once the portrait has been produced, and that conversation text is never written to the database, the backups or the logs. A very large conversation arrives in parts and sits in a temporary file on the server until the analysis request is assembled, then is consumed and deleted; an upload abandoned part way becomes unreadable after fifteen minutes. There are no user accounts. The email given at checkout is passed to Stripe and no copy is kept, and on the website your portrait history is stored in your own browser.

Two limits, from the same policy. Masking removes who is speaking, not what was discussed: if a conversation covered health, beliefs, relationships or sexuality, those passages reach the analysis provider inside the anonymised text, with no name attached. And that provider, which operates in the United States, retains submitted content for a limited period to monitor misuse of its own service, a retention Portraitor says it is unable to disable. The policy does not say how long that period is.

Where the money buys less than the free tools give

On the narrow question of what leaves your device, the free mode of WhatsAnalyze beats Portraitor outright. It sends nothing, while Portraitor sends masked text to a provider that keeps it for a period the policy does not state. If a statistical picture of a WhatsApp chat is enough, no paid tool on this page sends less than that free one.

On cookies, ChatAnalyzer’s policy claims only essential session cookies. The Portraitor website runs Google Analytics, which sets cookies; its privacy policy says so, says you can opt out through your browser or Google’s opt out add-on, and says the analytics cookies are not set at all if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track.

On reach, MosaicChats lists analysers for WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Telegram, Messenger and Snapchat. Portraitor takes WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and Instagram exports, as .txt, .html, .json or .zip files, so an iMessage or Snapchat conversation has nowhere to go at Portraitor.

On a number, LoveGraft states how long one of its AI providers may keep data, up to 30 days at Anthropic, where Portraitor’s policy states only a limited period. And on trying first, every other tool here shows you something without payment, where Portraitor shows nothing until the $10 is spent.

What the $10 buys is a reading of a conversation that has had its names masked on your device first, with no account and a stated discard once the portrait exists. The masking alone is not unique: the WhatsAnalyze cloud mode for subscribers also replaces names in the browser before it sends excerpts. None of the MosaicChats, ChatAnalyzer or LoveGraft pages read for this comparison describes masking names before the upload. The longer one to one comparisons are Portraitor against MosaicChats, Portraitor against WhatsAnalyze, Portraitor against LoveGraft and Portraitor against ChatAnalyzer, and the three way privacy reading is in which chat analyser keeps the least.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free chat analyser that does not upload my chat?

WhatsAnalyze says its free version reads the chat in your browser and uploads nothing, and its code is public on GitHub. Its free on device AI mode also runs locally; the stronger cloud mode is for subscribers and sends anonymised excerpts.

Is the MosaicChats report free?

Only part of it. Uploading is free with no signup or card, and the word cloud and relationship strengths are free; the full report, with the sentiment timeline, compatibility score, personality and patterns, needs Pro at $1 for the first month and then $9.99 a month.

Does Portraitor have a free trial?

No. The home page lists $10 for a single portrait and $19 a month for ten, with no free option. The automatic refund in the privacy policy applies when masking does not complete, and is not a trial.

Can a free chat analyser use my chat to train AI?

That depends on its policy, and the tools here differ. MosaicChats lists training models on anonymised, aggregated data; LoveGraft says its AI providers are configured not to train on your data; WhatsAnalyze says its cloud AI provider does not use the excerpts for training; and Portraitor’s policy says its provider does not use the conversation to train or improve its models.

How much does a full chat report cost if I only want one?

MosaicChats Pro is $1 for the first month and then renews at $9.99 a month, LoveGraft is a one time €4.99 or a lower local price, ChatAnalyzer Pro is $6.99 a month, and Portraitor is $10 for a single portrait with no renewal.

Each free tier on this page is paid for in something, and every one of those prices is written on the company’s own pages.
